Forum by the Sea is one of the more recent and larger malls.  It offers visitors with everything from designer clothing, perfume and jewelry to great restaurants and a movie multiplex.

GlobalDiner's Tips for getting the most out of CANCUN!

  1. Keep the tourist card that you filled out before your arrival.  It must be returned immigration officials when you leave Mexico.
  2. Many places accept U.S. currency.  Sometimes its a better bargaining chip than pesos when negotiating a price for a silver purchase.   Sometimes not.
  3. NEVER exchange currency at the hotel.  There are numerous exchange counters in downtown (ciudad) and the hotel zone.  Diner likes the one in the front of Plaza Caracol and by the rear door of Plaza Kulkulcán the best.   Always compare exchange rates.  The overall difference may be worth a few extra appetizers at dinner.
  4. Pick up copies of Cancun Tips Magazine, Cancun Tips Tourist Guide and Passport Cancun before you leave the airport.  These publications contain discount coupons, and lots of useful tourist information.
  5. Take the bus to your hotel unless you're well-heeled.  The cost is cheap ($14/2) compared to taking a cab ($45-$60).  Since the bus stops to release arrivals at every hotel along the way, it's slower.  But relax, they sell beer on the bus.  Besides, if you are arriving before 2:00pm, you'll probably have to wait for your room anyway.
  6. Take the bus for local transportation whether you are staying downtown, or on the hotel zone.  It's the cheapest and if you are tall, the most comfortable form of transportation.  The fare is just 5 pesos which is less than 45 cents.
  7. Tip waiters 10 to 15% depending on the service which is usually excellent at the most moderately priced places.
  8. Tip hotel/condo maids $2.00/day if you're really messy or in a suite.  Bellboys and skycaps get 25 to 50 cents a bag.
  9. Don't expect your restaurant check to be summarily placed on the table after your meal.  You have to ask for it (how civilized!).   Just say, "La Cuenta por favor. (La- kwin-ta poor fah-vor."
  10. HEALTH ADVISORY -  If you plan to donate blood, don't visit the ruins, .  The American Red Cross (ARC) isn't accepting blood donations from any recent visitors to the ruins.  Though there is no real health hazard, malaria carrying mosquitoes have been spotted in those areas.  As a result (and thankfully), ARC is playing it safe and declining blood donations from recent ruins visitors.   Since the incubation period is 2 - 10 weeks, ARC requests that you wait several (up to 6) months after your ruins excursion before you next donation.
  11. ATMs in the Hotel Zone are located at: Royal Mayan (885-1192), Plaza Terramar (883-3100), Convention Center (883-0366), Mayfair Plaza (883-1698), Plaza Flamingos (883-1653), Plaza Caracol (883-4652), and Plaza Kulkulcán (885-1550).
